From The Alchemist’s Magazine

An article by Thomas Moore

“…I meet many men and women who, in their emotional confusion and torment, search out a spiritual community, a leader, or a system for healing. But many contemporary spiritual leaders are in the business of easy inspiration and surface personal development. I don’t get the sense usually that they are authentic conduits to holiness. I don’t mean to question their sincerity or their relative effectiveness. But a bland mixture of pop psychology and sentimental theology doesn’t have the healing power of deep spirituality….”

Trivia

Who wrote this and when?

"The world is perhaps at the point of the greatest crisis in all human history, and there seems to be two attitudes we can assume. One is calmness, faith and conviction; the other would be despair. And despair is unthinkable. Let each, in his/her own way, dedicate his time, his services, his hope and his spiritual conviction to the common cause of liberty and justice for all. And let us work without tiring and pray without ceasing.”

Sustaining the Universe

One concept of religion thought in India is expressed by the phrase "sacred duty" or dharma. It relates to the specific role an individual plays - in body, mind and soul - to sustain the universe. The Sanskrit word is connected to the meaning "that which sustains".

Everything about an individual is significant because he/she is part of reality. Every action, thought and movement is sustaining what is. There is no escaping dharma.

What have you done recently to sustaing the universe?  :)

What have you contributed recently to your spiritual community, family or circle of friends?

Punny

image
Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community. The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours.

Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers.. He was considered a very smart cookie, but wasted much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he still was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions.

Doughboy is survived by his wife Play dough, three children: John Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.
The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

Who gives the rose its scent?

I was at a church once where the minister would recommend the book by Charles Barker, "How to change other people". It was a best seller. People would see the title and buy the book immediately. Naturally, no sooner had they read the first couple of pages, did they realize that the book was all about changing themselves. The miracle was that when they did change themselves, it was as if the outside world did change.

Alfred North Whitehead said it like this: "Nature is a dull affair, soundless, scentless, colorless, it is we who give the rose its scent and the nightingale its song."

Frogs Eyes

A friend told me a bout a study at the Institute of Technology in Massachusetts, in which experiments on frogs have shown that reality is not always what it appears to be.  Well, sort of.

Apparently, frogs have eyes that are structurally much like our own. Theoretically, they should be able to see as well as we do. BUT, micro electrodes implanted in the frogs eyes reveal that only limited information is being passed on from the eye to the frogs' brain.

From the richness of the visual world, only three very basic kinds of messages are being relayed to the frog.

1. General outline of environment
2. Birds of prey/movement
3. More precise information about food.

The rest of the world is filtered out, discarded as of no practical importance.

We are not much different from the frogs in this regard. Of all the information we have available, we simply do not take it in. But we constantly make decisions about how the "world is" based on what we choose to perceive. Looking through the world through our tiny slit on reality we see what we want to see!

Red Jeeps and Cocktails

Have you ever decided to buy a new car? A friend might say to you, "Have you considered buy a Red Jeep". "A Red Jeep?" you say..."I've never really seen a Red Jeep". "Oh, look, there is one right now parked outside the church" You like it, and you decide to take a closer look at Jeeps.

All of a sudden, the world is filled up with Jeeps. It is as if the Cosmic Mind of God heard you were interested in Jeeps and suddenly started production. Not. They were always there. You just weren't looking for them.

We are very, very sophisticated beings. We can tune out anything we do not want to know, and tune in on the strangest things. Like when we walk into a room and a clock is ticking really loudly, but after a while we tune out the sound....it doesn't stop....we just do not hear it anymore...we reduce the slit through which we see our world ... our reality inside changes, but on the outside things are just as they always were.

Someone once called this ability, "cocktail awareness". When we are at a party, we hear only the conversation we are engaged in, until someone says our name, and whoosh, our attention is dragged to the place.

Reality is an inside job, and perhaps we could be much happier if we paid attention to this.
